Updated: Nov 11, 2023

Festival is all round the corner, the lights are lit, the city and has become beautiful everything is well decorated. This is the time when we consume all sorts of food without looking for calorie intake. But there are some famous sweets where a bit of calorie reduction can be done to make the festive season little less guilty, so lets see 4 Diwali Sweets You Can Replace White Refined Sugar With Jaggery

01/04 Gulab Jamun:

Whether it is Diwali or no Diwali the love for Gulab Jamun never ends. It is believed that our “The Favourite Sweet” hails back to somewhere around the medieval period, where it was accidentally made by Mughal cooks taking inspiration from Persian recipe. When our Grandma or Mother used to make Gulab jamun traditionally, she used Khoa unlike like modern packs where it is made with milk powder. The Khoya is mixed little bit with Maida/refined wheat flour (If you want to avoid maida use whole wheat flour and rice flour in ratio of 1:1). The mixed Khoya is added with warm milk to make a soft dough. Small balls are made and fried in ghee. Now comes the syrup part, normally we make syrup of sugar and water, but we can replace this refined white sugar with jaggery. Take pan and add 4 cups of water and let it boil. Then add 41/2 cups of brown sugar and stir on medium flame, then add 1 1/2 cups of jaggery powder and let it boil. Check for the string of syrup. Towards end add 4-5 drops of lemon, 4-5 saffron and bit of rose water. Once the syrup is ready you can add fried balls and let it get soaked for min 2 hrs before serving. Serve and savour delicious Gulab Jamun made with Khoya and Jaggery.

02/04 Jalebi

Jalebis are impossible to resist, whether eaten by as such or with delicious rabdi. The sweet which is locally available in almost every knook and corner has its Persian Origin. Was this delicacy colored or sweet dipped we do not know. Every state in India has its own shape and making style of jalebi. But the What is unknown is whether the orange swirls of batter-dipped in sugar actually made their journey from Persia to the Indian Subcontinent. Jalebis are normally made keeping the maida batter for fermentation for minimum of 8-10 hours, but modern days recipe call for addition of baking soda to hasten the process. Maida is added with sour curd and mixed to a desirable consistency and then kept overnight for fermentation. Once the fermentation is done the batter is added in piping bag and fried in desi ghee to give amazing aroma. This fried jalebi is then added in sugar syrup where orange color is already added to it. At this stage the sugar syrup’s sugar can be replaced by ratio of brown sugar and jaggery to make it less guilt free sweet.

03/04 Laddu

Festival never ends without eating a single laddu whether it is motichoor laddu or besan laddu, everyone longs for laddus which is one of favourite amongst all Diwali Sweets. A sweet dish present in several parts of India and finds a sweet spot in heart of many people with its irresistible deliciousness. But, when we go out to purchase laddus for festival they are all filled with refined white sugar, palm fat, maida, color, flavour and preservatives. Making homemade laddus can be laborious process. But to start with, any laddu is normally made by roasting main ingredient like in case of Besan Laddu, Besan is first roasted in ghee and then sugar is added, but this white sugar can be replaced by Jaggery. Add jaggery powder and mix well. Make balls out of the mixed dough and serve. This way majority of laddus can be made by replacing sugar with Jaggery to enhance nutritional value. 04/04 Kaju Katli

The famous Diwali sweet Kaju katli has its origin way back to the era of Maratha empire. Also, folklore says it has its origin from Mughal times. The favourite kaju katli is made with cashew nuts, sugar, cardamom powder, and ghee butter cut into diagonal pieces and topped with silver foil. Some areas even Maida is added to the Kaju katli. But you can prepare at home with just 3 ingredients by replacing white sugar with Jaggery. Making Kaju Katli with Jaggery is easy, roast Cashew nuts and grind the same. Make Jaggery syrup (do not overheat), if you want add brown sugar to make it like sugar syrup. Add cashew powder to the syrup and mix and add bit of ghee over it. Mix the dough and spread it over a plate. Spread the dough evenly and if you don’t want the regular shape just roll in shape of balls.

These are the famous few sweets where the sugar can be replaced by jaggery and there is no need to add preservative. If you like you can add palm jaggery or coconut sugar as per your taste buds. But do let us know if you make a sweet with jaggery this festive season.
